The short answer
A furnace that blows cold air is usually either set to run the fan continuously, or it is failing to keep its burners lit, so the blower moves unheated air.
Look at the thermostat fan setting first. ON runs the blower all the time, including between heating cycles, which feels like cold air. AUTO runs it only when the burners are hot.
Cold air: causes ranked by how often we hear them
| Cause | What you notice | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fan set to ON | Cool air between cycles, warm air sometimes | Set fan to AUTO |
| Dirty flame sensor | Burners light, go out in 3–10 seconds, repeat | Clean or replace sensor |
| Tripped high-limit switch | Heats briefly, then cool air while the blower runs | Change the filter, open vents, test the limit |
| Failed ignitor | Clicks, no flame, then cold air or lockout | Replace the ignitor |
| Gas supply issue | No flame at all; other gas appliances may be off too | Check the valve, call the utility, check the propane tank |
| Condensate line frozen or clogged (90%+ furnaces) | Shuts down, may flash a pressure switch code | Thaw or clear the drain |
Why airflow matters so much in winter
A furnace's heat exchanger needs a steady flow of air across it. When a filter clogs, or several supply registers are closed to 'save heat', the exchanger overheats and the limit switch shuts off the burners while the fan keeps blowing. The house gets cold air and the furnace looks broken.
Repeated overheating also stresses the heat exchanger, the most expensive part in the furnace. A clean filter and open registers are cheap insurance.
What the repair visit looks like
- The technician watches a full call-for-heat cycle to see exactly where it fails.
- Measures temperature rise across the furnace to confirm airflow.
- Checks flame signal (microamps) at the sensor.
- Cleans or replaces the faulty part and verifies the burners stay lit.
- Checks venting and combustion before leaving.
High-efficiency furnaces in freezing weather

90%+ efficient furnaces vent through PVC pipes and drain condensate. In a hard freeze, ice can block the outdoor vent or the condensate line freezes where it runs outside. The pressure switch then stops the burners.
Clear snow from the intake and exhaust pipes after storms. Never seal or cover them.
If only some rooms are cold
If air from most registers is warm but a few rooms stay cold, the furnace may be fine. It's more likely a duct, damper or balancing issue. Ask the technician to check airflow at those rooms and look for duct leaks; the furnace FAQ covers related questions.
Cold-air FAQs
Is it normal for a furnace to blow cool air at first?
For about 30–60 seconds, yes. Modern furnaces delay the blower until the heat exchanger warms up. Cold air beyond a minute or two is not normal.
Can a thermostat cause cold air?
Yes: a fan set to ON, a heat pump thermostat on a gas furnace, or bad wiring to the W terminal can all produce cold air.
