Noisy furnace repair

A loud bang at ignition and a grinding blower are the two noises to act on right away.

Updated 2026-10-26 · Reviewed against manufacturer guidance and U.S. DOE / CPSC safety information.

Which furnace noises are urgent?

A loud bang at ignition and a grinding blower are the two noises to act on right away. Squealing, rattling and humming are usually less urgent but get worse with time.

Use the table below to match the sound to its likely cause, then mention it when you call. 'Bangs when it lights' points the technician straight to burners and gas pressure.

Why delayed ignition is dangerous

When burners are dirty or gas pressure is off, gas collects for a moment before lighting, and then ignites all at once. That small explosion stresses the heat exchanger and can crack it over time.

Dust that settles on burners over summer makes delayed ignition common on the first cold days. A burner cleaning and gas-pressure check usually fixes it.

Blower motors in heavy winter use

The blower runs for every heating cycle, so in a long winter it may run thousands of hours. Bearings dry out, capacitors weaken and the motor starts to hum or labor before it fails.

Catching it at the humming stage usually means a capacitor rather than a whole motor.

How a noisy furnace gets repaired

  1. The technician runs the furnace and listens at the burners, inducer and blower separately.
  2. Checks gas pressure and burner condition if the noise happens at ignition.
  3. Spins the blower wheel by hand and tests the motor amperage and capacitor.
  4. Inspects the heat exchanger if a rattle comes from inside the cabinet.
  5. Repairs or replaces the part, then runs several full cycles to confirm the noise is gone.

Before the technician arrives

  • Note exactly when the noise happens (start, during, stop)
  • Record a short phone video with sound
  • Check that the blower door and panels are seated
  • Turn the furnace off if you hear banging or grinding

Noise FAQs

Is it normal for a furnace to click?

One or two clicks at start and stop are normal relays and gas valves. Continuous clicking without a flame is not.

Can a noisy furnace be a carbon monoxide risk?

Rattling from a cracked heat exchanger or a banging delayed ignition can be. Make sure your CO alarms work.
