Why a furnace won't turn on
A furnace that shows no sign of life usually has a power, thermostat or safety-switch problem. If it starts but never lights, the fault is further along in the ignition sequence.
Separate the two cases first. 'Nothing happens at all' means no call for heat is reaching the furnace, or the furnace has no power. 'I hear the inducer motor but no flame' is an ignition problem, covered on the ignitor and flame sensor page.
Checks you can safely do first
- Thermostat is set to HEAT and at least 3°F above room temperature
- Thermostat screen is on; replace AA/AAA batteries if blank
- The furnace power switch (looks like a light switch near the unit) is ON
- The breaker for the furnace hasn't tripped
- The blower door is fully closed; it presses a safety switch
- The filter isn't completely blocked
Common causes and what fixes them
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thermostat blank | Dead batteries or failed thermostat | Batteries or a new thermostat |
| No lights on the control board | No power, blown 3–5A board fuse, failed transformer | Fuse or transformer, then find what shorted it |
| Board light flashing a code | Safety lockout (pressure switch, limit, flame) | Repair the fault the code points to |
| Inducer runs, nothing else | Pressure switch, blocked vent or condensate trap | Clear the vent or trap, replace the switch |
| Worked yesterday, dead after a storm | Power surge damaged the board | Control board replacement |
How a technician diagnoses a no-start furnace
- Confirms 120V power to the furnace and 24V from the transformer.
- Jumps the thermostat terminals to rule the thermostat in or out.
- Reads the board's fault-code history.
- Tests each safety switch in the chain (rollout, limit, pressure, door) for continuity.
- Repairs the cause, not just the blown fuse, then runs several full heat cycles.
When to stop and call
If the furnace smells of gas, if a breaker trips again right after you reset it, or if you see scorch marks on wiring, don't keep trying. Leave the system off. For a gas smell, leave the house and call the gas utility first.
Read the error light before you call

Most furnaces built in the last 20 years have an LED on the control board, visible through a small window in the blower door. Count the flashes and match them to the chart printed inside the door.
Telling the technician 'three flashes, pressure switch' instead of 'it won't come on' can save time on the visit.
Questions about a furnace that won't start
Can a dirty filter stop a furnace from turning on?
Indirectly, yes. A blocked filter makes the furnace overheat and trip its high-limit switch. After repeated trips, many boards lock out for an hour or more.
Why did my furnace stop working after I changed the thermostat?
The new thermostat may be wired to the wrong terminals, may need a C-wire for power, or may be set to cool or heat-pump mode. Check the installation settings.
