Furnace short cycling

Short cycling is when a furnace runs for only a few minutes, shuts off before the house is warm, and restarts soon after.

Updated 2026-10-26 · Reviewed against manufacturer guidance and U.S. DOE / CPSC safety information.

What short cycling means

Short cycling is when a furnace runs for only a few minutes, shuts off before the house is warm, and restarts soon after. A healthy furnace usually runs 10–15 minutes or more per cycle in cold weather.

It matters because the start-up of each cycle is the hardest moment for the ignitor, inducer and heat exchanger. Doubling the starts roughly doubles the wear.

Short cycling causes

The oversizing problem

Many homes have furnaces sized by rule of thumb rather than by a Manual J heat-load calculation. An oversized furnace reaches the thermostat setting so quickly that it shuts off before air has circulated through the house, then fires again a few minutes later.

If the furnace has always short cycled, even with a clean filter, sizing is a real possibility. That's a conversation about repair versus replacement, not a part swap.

What you can check today

  • Replace the filter and look at the date on the old one
  • Open every supply register and clear furniture off returns
  • Make sure the thermostat isn't above a register or in the sun
  • Clear snow and ice from outdoor PVC vent pipes
  • Note how long cycles last with a phone timer

How a technician pinpoints it

  1. Measures temperature rise; too high means an airflow problem.
  2. Checks the flame signal and the limit switch rating.
  3. Inspects the venting for blockage and correct slope.
  4. Reviews the thermostat's cycle rate, anticipator or CPH setting.
  5. Compares furnace output to a load estimate if oversizing is suspected.

Short cycling and the heat exchanger

Constant overheating stresses the heat exchanger metal. Over years, it can crack, which is how carbon monoxide gets into the airstream. Fixing short cycling early protects the most expensive and safety-critical part of the furnace.

Keep CO alarms on each floor and near bedrooms.

Short cycling FAQs

How many cycles per hour is normal?

In cold weather, roughly 3 to 6 cycles per hour is typical for most homes. Ten or more short cycles per hour is a problem.

Can low gas pressure cause short cycling?

Yes. Low gas pressure can produce a weak flame that the sensor doesn't detect reliably, and the furnace shuts down.
